Role and Responsibilities
Responsible for maintaining the council’s public image and brand through various marketing and communications initiatives.
Provides communications counsel to senior management, helping to enhance the organization’s success by applying proactive and reactive communications strategies.
Provides the public relations and overall media relations plans for the council.
Creates programs that positively position the council and BSA with the public and align closely with marketing campaigns to reinforce the BSA message.
Manages several Council-level activities including the Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner, University of Scouting, Cub Scout Family Weekends, Program Planning, Scouting for Food, Events with area Sports Teams and other Cultural Institutions, and Council Program Launch.
Supports the efforts of the Council’s Marketing, Activities and Program committees.
Primary focus: · 25% membership growth and retention · 25% event and activity promotion and support · 20% fundraising support · 20% other marketing support, including positive publicity/general brand building and events · 10% camp promotion Responsibilities: · *Marketing plan* – develops an annual marketing plan that prioritizes objectives, strategies, and tactics and that promises specific outcomes in return for requested investment levels · *National alignment* – aligns local council marketing initiatives in support of BSA National’s marketing priorities; leverages BSA National’s council campaigns and related assets · *Brand management* – makes sure all council marketing and communications are in alignment with national BSA brand standards · *Website *–maintains the council website ensuring it is professional, aesthetically pleasing, aligned with national brand standards, and that it promotes BSA, the council, and its activities, including its camp(s).
Ensures website content engages youth and adult program participation by including large volumes of promotional images, videos, and persuasive marketing copy.
Using Google Analytics or similar measurement program for website management and to improve the user experience.
· *Membership support* – provides marketing support for the membership function year-round.
· *Fundraising support *– provides support for the council’s fundraising events and campaigns.
· *Staff *– assists staff members in developing professional, brand-aligned communication materials.
· *Volunteers* – helps build and serve as staff support for the council marketing committee bringing in the knowledge, connections, and skillset necessary for successful council marketing efforts, including cross-functional alignment between marketing, membership, program, finance volunteers, and staff.
Educates and empowers districts and units to tell their positive stories through local media and their own social media channels.
· *Social media* – creates a fresh, strong, and constantly updated council presence on Facebook, LinkedIn, and other popular social media platforms, utilizing a blend of organic and promoted social media posts.
· *Newsletter* - creates and publishes council newsletters.
· *Proactive publicity *– identifies and implements events and other initiatives that can generate significant positive publicity for BSA.
· *Activities and events *– develops, manages, and promotes council level events and activities to support quality program delivery to scouts and units as well as generating public attention for Scouting.
Qualifications and Education Requirements * Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, graphic design, web management, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
* 5-10+ years’ experience in marketing roles.
Preferred Skills Proficient: · Written communication (collateral material copy, press releases, articles for publications, and speech writing) · Content creation and story-telling ability · Public and media relations (including building and maintaining relationships with reporters, journalists, editors, and other media personnel) · Graphic design, including Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign) · Expertise with social media platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn, and competence in designing, placing, and measuring demographically targeted and geo-targeted paid promotional campaigns · Email marketing best practices, including measurement and segmentation · Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint · Customer insight · Out-of-the-box thinking · Quick at finding the marketing/communication angle that will work · Strong interpersonal skills · Ability to self-motivate and manage multiple projects simultaneously * Marketing project management experience is a must - since there'll be so many balls to juggle and little time for do-overs Working knowledge: · SurveyMonkey or other online survey platforms · Marketing automation · Video production and editing * Event planning and management * Vendor management - bidding, contracting, and delegating marketing materials such as collateral, ad placement, display banners, etc.
