Legislative Policy Advisor

*Position Overview:* The Buffalo Common Council invites applications for the position of Legislative Policy Advisor.
This pivotal role serves as the Council's attorney, offering comprehensive legal and policy guidance to facilitate the Council's legislative functions.
The advisor plays a key role in drafting legal documents, advising on policy issues, and conducting legal research to support the development and implementation of municipal laws and policies.
This position requires close collaboration with Council Members, city departments, and external stakeholders to ensure that legislative initiatives are both effective and reflective of the community's needs.
*Key Responsibilities:* * Provide expert legal advice on municipal legislative matters and policy issues.
* Draft, review, and recommend modifications to proposed legislation and policy documents.
* Conduct in-depth legal research and analysis to support council decisions.
* Collaborate with various stakeholders to develop policy initiatives and strategies.
* Keep abreast of relevant legal developments, including state and federal laws and judicial decisions affecting municipal governance.
* Prepare detailed reports and presentations for Council Members and committees.
* Engage with the community and stakeholders to gather input and foster consensus on policy issues.
*Requirements:* * Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
* Licensed to practice law in New York State.
* A minimum of 3 years of relevant legal experience, with a preference for expertise in municipal law, legislative drafting, or public policy.
* Proven knowledge of the legislative process and experience with municipal governance.
* Exceptional legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
* Strong communication and interpersonal abilities, capable of effectively engaging with diverse stakeholders.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
* Must be a current resident of the City of Buffalo, or willing to relocate upon acceptance of the position.
*Preferred Qualifications:* * Experience or proficiency in financial analysis, particularly related to municipal budgets and financial planning.
